Lock down a facility

In some applications, it may be necessary to lock a facility down due to an emergency. An emergency could be due to a riot, chemical spill, an individual with hazardous behavior, or for other reasons.

There are varying levels of security related to a facility lock down condition, and the system can be configured to respond in a number of ways:

  • Lock doors so that only selected card carriers may unlock doors
  • Lock doors so that all card carriers may unlock doors
  • Lock doors so that no one may unlock doors until an emergency indication is restored to normal

In addition, the system can affect the user’s ability to exit the area in the event of a lock down. Depending upon the facility, it may be necessary to control both entry and exit of the building. In a laboratory or industrial environment, consider the following:

Protected Item
Goal
Protect employees from harm

Controlling entry to keep something or someone outside such as in the case of a riot

Prevent a select agent from being released into the environment

Controlling entry and exit to keep something or someone inside, such as in the case of laboratory accident

Is your work affecting a fire rating?

Altering a fire rated door or its frame by drilling holes or mounting hardware may void its warranty or negate fire ratings and certifications. We recommend that you consult with a licensed, professional locksmith, the door manufacturer, and local construction authorities before making alterations to any door.

How does your work affect life safety efforts?

Local jurisdiction statutes or laws may require use of particular exit methods, and may disallow other strategies. We recommend that you contact local authorities to obtain a clear understanding of local requirements related to exit and sound life safety practices.
